ORM4009 | Basic Principles of Forest Management | 2+0+0 | ECTS:5 | Year / Semester | Fall Semester | Level of Course | First Cycle | Status | Compulsory | Department | DEPARTMENT of FOREST ENGINEERING | Prerequisites and co-requisites | None | Mode of Delivery | | Contact Hours | 14 weeks - 2 hours of lectures per week | Lecturer | Prof. Dr. Mehmet MISIR | Co-Lecturer | PROF. DR. Mehmet MISIR, | Language of instruction | Turkish | Professional practise ( internship ) | None | | The aim of the course: | The course aims to provide the students with a theoretical management knowledge and practical hands-on experiences; to sharpen their skills and develop expertise for harmonizing basic knowledge of forest science into a coherent forest management framework, characterize (inventory) forest ecosystems, stratify the areas into social, economic and ecological values and map them, prepare a sustainable forest management plan, set up forest management strategies and choose the best among them with operations research techniques and prepare a term project in the form of a forest management plan for a sample forest area and present it in front of the class |
Learning Outcomes | CTPO | TOA | Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to : | | | LO - 1 : | Recall basic principles of core courses, draw conceptual framework of forest management and relate national and international forest policies to forest management planning | 2,3,4 | | LO - 2 : | Characterize forest resources in terms of stand types, amount of area, basal area, volume and increment per ha | 2,3,4 | | LO - 3 : | Differentiate the planning principles of even-aged and uneven-aged forests | 2,3,4 | | LO - 4 : | Determine and relate forest forms and forest values (functions) | 2,3,4 | | LO - 5 : | Apply participatory planning approaches in forest management | 2,3,4 | | CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), LO : Learning Outcome | |
A.Forest management concept, its contents, relationships with other disciplines, historical developments, planning systems, approaches, techniques and processes at national and international scale
B. Sustainable forest management and green certification
C.Forest resource values, management objectives, conservation targets, forest forms and values, and planning approaches (classical planning, multiple use planning, ecosystem based planning and stand-based planning, management of even-aged and uneven-aged forests)
D.Forest values, decription, criteria and indicators as well as silvicultural interventions to be applied for each forest values/areas
E.Forest inventory and stratification (area inventory, volume and increment inventory, site classification, NWFP, health and capacity inventory) setting a plot, measuring trees for inventory, observing forest values, determining stand types and site index, management units, compartments and sub compartments, creating all relevant maps, use of empirical yield tables, growth and yield for wood production, water production, NWFP, protection of soil, carbon balance, O2 level, ecotourism value. (This topic will be shared with forest management course)
F.Use of decision making techniques (simulation and linear programming) in forest management planning
