The aim of the course:
Taxonomy, identification, morphology and general characteristics ofthe important fish species in Turkey is to be able to know.

 Week 1Taxonomy and identification. Phylogenetic and Empirical classification. Monophletic classification (Species, Genus, Family, Class, Phylum). Binomial nomenclature and rules. Morphometric and meristic features in fish. General characteristics of the fish (scale type, tail type, mouth type etc. According to Lagler et al. (1977) the classification of the fish (Agnatha and Gnathostomata).
 Week 2Jawless fish (Agnatha: Lamprey and Hagfish). Taxonomy, morphology and bio-ecological characteristics of Lamprey and Hagfish. Videos on the subject.
 Week 3Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of chondrichytyes fish (Elasmobranchia and Holocephali). Ampullae of lorenzini and line lateralis in chondrichytyes fish. Reproduction and embrionic development (ovipar, vivipar and ovovivipar) in chondrichytyes fish. Videos on the subject.
 Week 4The classification of bony fish (Osteichthtyes) and general characteristics. Ordo: Acipenseriformes. General characteristics, morphology and bio-ecological characteristics. Sturgeons and CITES aggrement. Endangered species of sturgeon.
 Week 5Ordo: Anguiliformes and Siluriformes. Taxonomy, morphology and bio-ecological characteristics. The morphologic changes during reproductive migration of eels. The general characteristics of Murray eels and Conger eels. Catfish species living Turkish waters and video images on the subject.
 Week 6Ordo: Clupeiformes (Herring). Taxonomy, general characteristics, morphologies and important species (sardines, shad, sprat, anchovy). Diagnostic features of this species. Video images on the subject.
 Week 7Ordo: Salmoniformes (salmonids), Gadiformes (whiting), Beloniformes (Garfish). Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics. Video images on the subject.
 Week 8Ordo: Syngnathiformes (seahorse and pipefish) and Scorpaeniformes (scorpion fish). Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics. CITES agreement on seahorse, pipefish. Videos on the subject.
 Week 9Mid term exam
 Week 10Ordo: Cypriniformes and Esociformes. Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics. Videos on the subject.
 Week 11Ordo: Lampriformes and Lophiiformes. Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics. Videos on the subject.
 Week 12Ordo: Pleuronectiformes (flat fish). Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of this ordo. The morphological differences amongs turbot, halibut fish and sole. Videos on the subject.
 Week 13Ordo: Perciformes, Subordo: Percoidei (seabass, horsemackerel, bluefish, coral fish) and Mugilodei (Mullet). Taxonomy, morphology and general information of this subordo. The morphological differences between redmullet and striped red mullet. Videos on the subject.
 Week 14Ordo: Perciformes, Subordo: Trachioidei, Blennioidei and Gobioidei. Taxonomy, morphology and general information of this subordo. Videos on the subject.
 Week 15Ordo: Perciformes, Subordo: Scombroidei (mackerel, bonito, tuna and swordfish). Taxonomy, morphology and general information of this subordo. Videos on the subject.
