| Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Western Languages and Literature was established in 1993. The department started its educational activities for the first time in the 1999-2000 academic year with the members of the academic staff in the Department of English Language and Literature. The medium of instruction is English. The education period is 5 (five) years including the Preparatory Programme. As of the 2022 - 2023 academic term, our department has also started to offer the Pedagogic Formation Programme. The Applied Linguistics Master's programme, which was opened within the Institute of Social Sciences since the 2001-2002 academic year, is one of the few graduate programmes in the field of our country. The duration of education is 2 years. In the Spring semester of 2008-2009 academic year, the English Language and Literature PhD programme was also established. | | | QUALIFICATION AWARDED | | | Graduating students are offered BA diploma in English Language and Literature. | | | LEVEL of QUALIFICATION: | | | European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL), Level 6 | | | MODE of STUDY | | | Full Time | | | ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS | | | Those who have fulfilled the requirements of the Turkish Higher Educational Council and who achieved the required score from the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) are admitted to the department. | | | OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME | | | Our program offers courses in English language, English literature, American culture and literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, English language teaching, teaching English as a foreign language, assessment and evaluation, research methods in education. The students gain skills in language teaching, translation, and reading literature critically. Our department works in collaboration with United States Cultural relations office in order to raise intercultural understanding. Our students also go to the United States to improve their skills through the Student Leadership Program and Fulbright Scholarships. Our students participate in Erasmus program successfully and gain experiences in living and studying abroad. | | | RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING | | The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.
In this Directive,
* Recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
* Recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
* And the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.
Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently. | | | QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS | | | | | EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS | | For each course, students are subjected to a midterm exam / semester study (seminar, quiz, homework or a second midterm exam) and a final exam. The mid-term exam contributes 50%, while the final exam contributes 50% to the grade. All exams are evaluated out of 100 points. Students are required to get at least 45 points from the final exam. Students who receive one of the letter grades (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) and (CC) from a course are considered to have succeeded in that course. To take the final exam of a course, students must be enrolled and attend at least 70% of first-time courses and 80% of seminars. Students who fail to fulfil these conditions cannot be admitted to the final exam.
Instead, they will receive a letter grade of D. Mid-term and final exams are held on the dates announced in advance. For more information on the evaluation of the grades, please visit the related page: http://www.mevzuat.gov.tr/Metin.Aspx?MevzuatKod=8.5.16677&MevzuatIliski=0&sourceXmlSearch= | | | GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS | | Students who successfully complete all of the courses in the programme (240 ECTS credits in total) and obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are awarded a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature. | | | OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES | | | The graduates can work as teachers of English in primary, secondary and high schools; as lecturers of English in private and state-run universities; as research assistants in similar academic institutions; as guides, interpreters; and as staff in the import-export departments of private companies. Some of our students have also gained job opportunities in the tourism and aviation industry as well as business. | | | ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES | | | MA, PhD | | | CONTACT INFORMATION | | | | | DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : | | The Department of English Language and Literature is located in the Faculty of Literature building and the department facilities are as follows: 2 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, 3 Lecturers, 4 Research Assistants in the department.
