The aim of the course:
This course examines the modernist movement in the British Novel that emerged in the early 1900s and continued till the 1940s. The course aims to enable the student to acquire the knowledge and appreciation of Modernism and Modern English Novel through the study of some of the representative texts, writers, articles and extracts within their social, cultural, literary and historical context. It introduces students to the literary traditions and movements associated with modernism and the Modern Novel through the study of exemplary texts, which is essential for a better understanding and appreciation of the Modern English Novel.

Contents of the Course
It covers a historical, cultural and literary introduction to modernism along with its main figures, characteristics and related ?isms such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf; stream of consciousness, interior monologue; expressionism, impressionism, symbolism and postmodernism. To this end, the course includes the main representatives of the Modern English Novel along with their monumental works: E. M. Forster?s A Passage to India, Joseph Conrad?s Heart of Darkness, Virginia Woolf?s To the Lighthouse and James Joyce?s A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man. The selected novels will be analysed technically and thematically as examples of the modern novel.
