The aim of the course:
The course aims to introduce the 18th Century novel within the social, historical and literary background of the 18th Century to enable the student to acquire knowledge and appreciation of the period and 18th Century novel through the study of some of the representative writers and novels within their social, cultural, literary and historical contexts.

Contents of the Course
It introduces the student to the 18th Century world emphasizing the novel as a new genre pursuant to social and cultural developments of the period through the study of exemplary texts. The course covers a historical, cultural and literary introduction to the 18th Century along with its major developments and changes such as the rise of the middle class and novel genre within the framework of the literary works. To this end, the course includes the main representatives of the 18th Century novel along with their monumental works: Aphra Behn, Horace Walpole, and Daniel Defoe.
