The aim of the course:
The course aims to develop students' analytical competence in language and discourse by fostering a nuanced understanding of textual structures, communicative modes, and interpretive frameworks essential for critical engagement with texts in academic and professional contexts.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
LO - 1 : - Students will be able to differentiate between language, literal language, literary language, verbal discourse, and nonverbal discourse.5 - 9 - 131,
LO - 2 : - Students will be able to differentiate between text, context, intertext, and metatext.
LO - 3 : - Students will be able to analyse the linguistic features and discourse structures of texts.
LO - 4 : - Students will be able to conduct critical and contextual analyses of texts.

Contents of the Course
This course introduces key distinctions in language and discourse, guiding students through literal, literary, verbal, and nonverbal forms. It explores textual layers?context, intertext, metatext?and equips learners with analytical tools for linguistic, critical, and contextual interpretation of diverse texts across genres and communicative environments.

 Week 1Reading and Language as Communication Reading is explored as a communicative act, with a focus on meaning-making and transmission through language.
 Week 2Reading and Language as a System of Science Language is studied as a scientific system; reading as a method of inquiry and analysis.
 Week 3Language and Metaphor The role of metaphor in shaping thought and meaning in language is examined with examples.
 Week 4Reading Verbal and Nonverbal Discourses Verbal and nonverbal discourses are compared; focus on linguistic and visual/gestural expression.
 Week 5Oral and Written Discourses Differences and interactions between oral and written forms of discourse are analyzed.
 Week 6Texts, Context, Intertext The relationship between texts, their contexts, and intertextual connections is explored.
 Week 7Intratext and Metatext Internal textual structures and external interpretive layers (metatexts) are examined.
 Week 8Reading Multimodality Multimodal texts combining visual, auditory, and verbal elements are analyzed.
 Week 9Midterm Exam
 Week 10Text as Allegory Allegorical structures and layered meanings in texts are explored through examples.
 Week 11Figures of Speech Literary devices and figures of speech are introduced and analyzed in context.
 Week 12Reading Genres Various genres and discourse types are introduced; transitions and hybrid forms are analyzed.
 Week 13Four-Aspect Critical Taxonomy A four-dimensional model for critical reading and textual analysis is introduced.
 Week 14Text and Historical Context The relationship between texts and their historical contexts is examined.
 Week 15Reading Visual Texts Visual texts and strategies for interpreting visual narratives are explored.
