The aim of the course:
The course aims at introducing students to the life and thought of each of the great philosophers of the western philosophical tradition; the main goal is to understand the fundamental categories of philosophical thought which have shaped the Western mind and to enable students to understand the diversity of traditions and modes of critical inquiry within Western thought.

Contents of the Course
This course offers a comprehensive survey of the major thinkers, schools, and movements in Western philosophy from antiquity to the modern era. Beginning with the Pre-Socratic philosophers, the course explores the works of Plato and Aristotle, moves through medieval Christian, Islamic, and Jewish philosophical traditions, and then follows the development of early modern philosophy from Descartes to Kant. Attention will be paid to key philosophical problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political theory.
