This course offers a comprehensive survey of the major thinkers, schools, and movements in Western philosophy from antiquity to the modern era. Beginning with the Pre-Socratic philosophers, the course explores the works of Plato and Aristotle, moves through medieval Christian, Islamic, and Jewish philosophical traditions, and then follows the development of early modern philosophy from Descartes to Kant. Attention will be paid to key philosophical problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political theory. |
