This course examines the theoretical and practical dimensions of foreign language teaching to children aged 6-12, focusing on the cognitive, social, and affective processes involved in early language learning. The course will provide an in-depth analysis of language acquisition processes in children, the influence of individual and environmental factors, appropriate teaching methodologies, material selection, and classroom management strategies. In the first part of the course, foreign language acquisition in children will be explored. Topics will include the differences between natural language acquisition and foreign language learning, the role of hereditary abilities (biological factors) and environmental influences (family, school, media), the cognitive and neurological foundations of early language learning, and the critical period hypothesis. The course will also examine the acquisition of morphological, syntactic, and semantic structures in young learners, as well as the development of vocabulary, phonology, and pragmatics.
Following this, foreign language teaching strategies for children will be addressed. Discussions will focus on age-appropriate methods to support listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as the role of game-based teaching, storytelling, drama, songs, and movement-based activities in communicative language teaching. The relationship between language input and output, meaning-making, response development, and the enhancement of productive language skills will also be examined.
The course will further analyze the suitability, format, attractiveness, and effectiveness of teaching materials in supporting language learning. The evaluation and use of both digital and print materials will be discussed. Additionally, the effective use of visual and auditory tools in foreign language teaching will be examined, along with interactive and game-based language learning resources. The course will also explore the application of stories, cartoons, songs, drama activities, role-playing, and digital applications in teaching foreign languages to children. |
