Contents of the Course
This course explores selected foundational works from world literature that have significantly influenced literary, philosophical, and political thought across time. Beginning with Aristotle's Poetics, we will examine the origins of literary theory and dramatic structure. Sophocles' Oedipus Rex will be studied as a model of classical tragedy and human destiny. The course continues with Machiavelli?s The Prince, engaging with early modern political philosophy and power dynamics. We then read selections from Cervantes? Don Quixote to explore narrative innovation, irony, and the emergence of the modern novel. Throughout the semester, students will develop skills in close reading, literary analysis, comparative thinking, and cultural criticism.
