The Civil Engineering Department, which is the first department of the Karadeniz Technical University to accept enrolment and fourth oldest civil engineering department in Turkey, belonged to Civil and Architectural Faculty that is established and started education on September 9, 1963. The first students are graduated in 1967-1968 term with a graduate degree being the first graduates of Karadeniz Technical University. The department has six divisions currently including Structures, Structural materials, Mechanics, Transportations, Geotechnics and Hydraulics. 2 - Obtaining the required grade for National University Higher Education Transforming Exam (LYS), | | OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME | | Civil Engineering Department is a division dealing with education and research on the design, construction and operation of any type of structure used in the daily life of human directly or indirectly. Civil engineering is a broad engineering discipline with a curriculum providing a strong foundation in mathematics and physics followed by in-depth education in structures, mechanics, construction materials, geotechnical engineering, transportation and construction management. The main objective of the department is to provide the required knowledge for the rapidly developing science and technology, and to graduate engineers well educated parallel to the developing technology with the required knowledge and ability to transmit these knowledge to practice. | | RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING | | The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.
In this Directive,
- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.
Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently. | | QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS | | The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum including summer practices, with a CGPA of 2.00 out of 4.00. | | EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS | | The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Civil Engineering is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 81-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA, 76-80 BA, 70-75 BB, 60-69 CB, 50-59 CC, 45-49 DC, 40-44 DD, 30-39 FD and 0-29 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam. | | GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS | | The students who have successfully completed all of the thought courses of the programme with 240 ECTS credits, achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and had a pass grade from the Professional placement period and the report prepared therein are given Bachelor's Degree in CIVIL ENGINEERING. | | OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES | | The graduates of the civil engineering department has many opportunities of employment in a varitey of state and private companies. There are also cases where the graduates setup up their own jobs in various fields of civil engineering. | | ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES | | The students who have successfully graduated from the department may apply to graduate programmes in the field of civil engineering here and in other universities, as well as other fields accepting student from the field of civil engineering. | | CONTACT INFORMATION | | | | DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : | | In addition to main building, there are three buildings namely Construction and Materials Laboratory, Hydraulics and Environment Laboratory, and Geotechnical and Transportation Laboratory which belong to the department. The department has also a computer laboratory with a capacity of 80 students. There are 24 class rooms which have internet access available, in the main building and in the labs. Three rooms in the main building are allocated for the students as Student Club, Young`s IMO and Students` Representative. Commercial software such as SAP2000, PROBINA, IDESTATIK, OSKA, PRIMAVERA, and AUTOCAD are available for students in the computer lab. There are also 7 technological classrooms for use of meetings and seminars. |
