FOUNDATION & HISTORY
Established in 2020 and starting its education in the 2023-2024 academic year, the KTÜ Software Engineering Department offers 100% English education. This program has a total duration of five years, including an English preparatory class. Students who pass the proficiency exam conducted by our university's School of Foreign Languages or who achieve sufficient scores in internationally recognized exams are entitled to start directly in the first year. Students who do not meet the proficiency level receive English preparatory education according to their levels. The Software Engineering Department also plans to commence postgraduate education activities. In line with this plan, our department aims to offer innovative and forward-looking educational programs. Initially, our department employs 4 Assistant Professors and 4 Research Assistants. In the future, we will continue to strengthen our academic staff with qualified faculty members. Thus, we aim to provide our students with the highest level of education and research opportunities. The KTÜ Software Engineering Department is committed to equipping its students with the most up-to-date knowledge and preparing them to become successful software engineers in today's rapidly changing and evolving world of technology.

OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME
The Software Engineering undergraduate program aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge in the field of software engineering. The main objectives of the program are as follows:

Provide students with a solid foundation in core topics such as software engineering, algorithms, data structures, programming languages, and computer systems. This will enable students to fully understand the software development processes and the software life cycle.
Develop students' abilities to solve complex software problems using current software engineering techniques and modern engineering tools. This aims to equip students with effective problem-solving skills and the ability to produce innovative solutions in software projects.
Equip students with the competencies to design, implement, and analyze software systems required to solve software engineering problems. Students will gain in-depth knowledge in areas such as software architectures, design patterns, and system integration.
Instill in students the ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively on software projects. The skills to apply effective communication techniques in professional environments are crucial for their success as software engineers.
In line with these objectives, the program aims to produce graduates who are equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, becoming innovative and effective software engineers.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING
The "Recognition of Prior Learning Directive," Senate Decision No. 340 dated 28.07.2023, has been adopted and entered into force to establish the principles that must be followed for the recognition, accreditation, and transfer of the achievements acquired by students registered in all programs at Karadeniz Technical University from institutions outside of higher education.

The directive includes:

Recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies gained through personal interest via exemption exams to count towards program courses.
Recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio assessment to count towards program courses.
Accreditation of certificates obtained from accredited institutions in line with their personal interests.
The announcement of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, submission of applications, and their evaluation are carried out on the dates specified in the academic calendar.

Recognition of Prior Learning offers numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, the benefits include enhancing professional development and mobility in the labor market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, enabling early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, promoting learning, and increasing student motivation and self-confidence. From the employers' perspective, it contributes to addressing skills or competency gaps in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for educational purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS
For students enrolled in the Software Engineering Department to graduate and receive their bachelor's degree, they must successfully complete courses equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS credits as outlined in the curriculum, complete a 60-day professional internship and the associated internship report, and successfully complete their graduation projects in accordance with the Graduation Project Implementation Directive.
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS
Students are subjected to midterm exam and final exam for each course. The contribution to the final grade is 50% from the midterm exam (during the semester, the course instructor may distribute this contribution to assignments, projects, presentations, etc.) and 50% from the final exam. All exams are graded out of 100 points, and a minimum of 45 points is required on the final exam. At the end of each semester, students can take makeup exams for the courses they failed during that semester. Students who receive one of the following letter grades: AA, BA, BB, CB, or CC, are considered to have passed the course.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students who successfully complete all courses in the program (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS credits), achieve a minimum weighted GPA of 2.0 out of 4.0, successfully complete their graduation project, and pass their professional internship and the prepared internship report will be awarded a Bachelor's degree in SOFTWARE ENGINEERING.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES
Software Engineers can be employed in all public and private organizations operating in various fields such as education, healthcare, communication, transportation, banking, manufacturing industry, defense industry, commerce, and services. In these organizations, software engineers can work in various roles such as system analyst, software designer, software developer, software test engineer, software quality assurance specialist, project manager, database administrator, and computer systems administrator.
ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES
Candidates who successfully complete their undergraduate education can pursue graduate (master's and doctoral) programs, provided they obtain a valid score on the ALES exam and have a sufficient level of English proficiency.
