Introduction to Rock Physics. Basic units. Rocks of the Earth ? their composition and classification ( Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary Rocks). Pore sapce properties of rocks ( Porosity, permeability and specific internal surfaces). The influence of depth and pressure on permeability. Geometrical properties of grains in rocks. Density of rocks. Magnetic properties of rocks. Natural radioactivity of rocks and radioactive heat generation. Elastic and anelastic properties of rocks and minerals. Seismic Wave attenuation and attenuation mechanisms of rocks. Thermal properties of rocks and minerals. Electrical properties of rocks. Measurements of physical properties of rocks in laboratory and insitu geophysical methods. Some correlations between various physical properties of rocks and their interpretations (correlations between geophysical properties, correlations between geophysical and geotechnical properties, correlations between geophysical and strength properties). |
