The aim of the course:
The componets of concrete as a composite material, along with its fresh and hardened state properties will be extensively presented in the scope of the course. In addition, the basic steps for mix proportioning will also be provided.

Contents of the Course
Classification of construction materials. Calcium based binders. Gypsum, lime, and cement. Manfacturing and composition of Portland cement. Hydration prodcuts and their morphology. Tests on cements. Cement types produced in Turkey. Aggregates for concrete. Deleterious substabces in aggregates. Physical and mechanical properties of aggregates. Sieve anlysis and gradation. Limit curves for gradation. Methods used for appropriate gradation. Mixing water, Chemical addmixtures. Mineral additives. Poozolanic activity. Properties of fresh concrete. Consistency and workability. Factors affecting workability. Segregation, honeycoming,, and bleeding. Concreting in abnormal weather conditions. Propeerties of hardened concrete. Factors affecting the strenthg of concrete. Behavior of concrete under compression. Creep and shrinkage concrete. Permeability and durability of concrete. Proportioning.of concrete mix. Concrete classes. Exposure classes. Procedure for concrete mix design. Metals.
