The aim of the course:
To teach the historical foundations of Roman civilisation; to understand the political, military, social and cultural processes from the Roman Kingdom to the Republic and the rise of the Empire. Students will be able to evaluate Roman history not only as a sequence of events, but also in the contexts of institutional development, ideology and identity.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :

Contents of the Course
The origins of Rome and the prehistory of the Italian peninsula; the period of the Roman Kingdom and the socio-political structure of the kingdom; the foundation of the Republic, constitutional institutions and class struggles; Roman expansion in Italy and the Italian allied system; the Carthaginian Wars and Mediterranean domination; the crises, civil wars and reform movements of the late Republican period (Gracchus, Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Caesar); the dissolution of Republican institutions; the rise of Augustus and the birth of the Principatus regime.
