Contents of the Course
Historical sources have great importance in the evaluation of the past events. Without them, any interpretation of the history will be a mistake. The Ottoman Empire reigned six hundred years in a very wide area and its territory sheltered many nations. Thus, in Turkey and in the other countries of the Ottoman geography a very rich literature was formed. The first native histories of the Ottoman Empire were the menakıbnames and gazavatnames, which were composed in conformity with the Islamic tradition. Following that, the Ottomans naturally made effort to write their histories. These were general histories, poetic histories, histories of a certain time or events and appendixes to some earlier books. In this lecture, we are going to examine the chronics of the Classical Age. The chronics will be compared to their contemporaries. We will make critics and the analysis of the sources and try to show how to reach the true knowledge.
