The aim of the course:
To recognize fish living in Turkish waters, to know their taxonomic, morphological and general characteristics and to distinguish species

Contents of the Course
General characteristics, taxonomy, morphology, general biology of jawless, cartilaginous and bony fish living in inland waters and seas of Turkey.

 Week 1Definition of systematics. Phylogenetic classification. Monophyletic classification (Species, Genus, Family, Order, Class, Phylum). Binomial nomenclature and rules. Morphometric and meristic features in fish
 Week 2Taxonomy of jawless (Agnatha: Lamprey and Hagfish). Morphometric and meristic characteristics of lamprey and hagfish.
 Week 3Taxonomy of Chondrichthyes (Elasmobranchia (sharks and rays) and Holocephali) morphology and bio-ecological features.
 Week 4Classification of bony fishes (Actinopterygii and Sarcopterygii) and general characteristics. General characteristics and morphometric and meristic features of the order Acipenseriformes (Sturgeon).
 Week 5General characteristics, morphology and bio-ecological features of Anguiliformes (Eel) and Siluriformes (Catfish) orders. General characteristics of eels and Mırans.
 Week 6General characteristics, morphologies and important species (sardine, shad, sprat and anchovy) of the order Clupeiformes (Herring). Diagnostic features to be considered in species distinction
 Week 7Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of Salmoniformes (Trout), Gadiformes (whitings), Beloniformes (Garfish) orders
 Week 8Mid-term exam
 Week 9Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of the orders Syngnathiformes (Seahorse and pipefish) and Scorpaeniformes
 Week 10Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of the orders Cypriniformes and Esociformes
 Week 11Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of the orders Lampriformes and Lophiiformes
 Week 12Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of the order Pleuronectiformes (Flat fish). The characteristics to be considered in the species differentiation of turbot, flounder and sole fish.
 Week 13Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of the suborders Percoidei and Mugilodei (Multipliers) from the order Perciformes. Characteristics to be considered in the species differentiation of red mullet and mullet.
 Week 14Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of the suborders Trachioidei, Blennioidei and Gobioidei belonging to the order Perciformes
 Week 15Taxonomy, morphology and general characteristics of the suborder Scombroidei belonging to the order Perciformes
