The aim of the course:
This course aims to examine the diplomatic history of the Ottoman Empire from its foundation to its dissolution. It focuses on diplomatic practices, institutions, treaties, and interactions with other states and empires. Special attention is given to the transformation of Ottoman diplomacy in response to the emergence of modern international systems, particularly from the 17th century onward. The course also encourages critical engagement with primary sources and scholarly interpretations.

Contents of the Course
Foundations of Ottoman diplomacy and Islamic legal-political tradition Empire-building and diplomacy in the classical period Major treaties, capitulations, and ambassadorial missions Relations with Europe, Russia, and the Islamic world 19th-century transformations: Tanzimat, Congress diplomacy, and Westernization World War I, secret treaties, and the end of empire Theoretical approaches to Ottoman diplomacy in the context of international relations
