The aim of the course:
The aim of this course is to enable students to critically analyze nationalism and state-building processes in the Middle East through major theoretical frameworks. Students are expected to evaluate the political, social, and historical dimensions of national identity formation comparatively and relate contemporary regional developments to theoretical debates.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
PO - 2 : Critically evaluates the relationships between state-building, citizenship regimes, and identity politics within their historical and political contexts.2 - 10
PO - 10 : Comparatively analyzes the processes of nationalism and national identity formation in the Middle East within major theoretical frameworks.

Contents of the Course
This course analyzes nationalism, national identity, and state-building processes in the Middle East within historical and theoretical frameworks. Drawing on major theories of nationalism (modernist, ethnosymbolist, primordialist approaches), it examines post-Ottoman state formation, colonial legacies, border-making, identity politics, citizenship regimes, and authoritarian state structures.
