The aim of the course:
The primary aim of this course is to provide students with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills regarding the identification, diagnosis, and management of bacterial pathogens that cause economic losses in aquaculture. The course aims to teach disease not merely as the presence of a pathogen but within the framework of Snieszko's Disease Triad (Host-Pathogen-Environment), enabling students to analyze environmental stress factors. Furthermore, it intends to instruct on strategies for mitigating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) risks, administering medication in compliance with Turkish and EU regulations, monitoring residues (MRL), and applying preventive medicine strategies such as vaccination.

Programme OutcomesCTPOTOA
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :
PO - 1 : Students will be able to identify and classify major bacterial pathogens (Gram-negative and Gram-positive) affecting cultured fish based on clinical signs and laboratory data.1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 51,3,4,
PO - 2 : Students will master the specialized terminology of fish pathology (e.g., exophthalmia, ascites, furuncle) and use it effectively in professional communication.1,2,3,
PO - 3 : Students will demonstrate proficiency in performing diagnostic necropsies, aseptic sampling from the kidney/spleen, and executing standard bacterial culture techniques.1,2,4,
CTPO : Contribution to programme outcomes, TOA :Type of assessment (1: written exam, 2: Oral exam, 3: Homework assignment, 4: Laboratory exercise/exam, 5: Seminar / presentation, 6: Term paper), PO : Learning Outcome

Contents of the Course
This course covers the etiology, epidemiology, and pathology of major Gram-negative (Aeromonas, Vibrio, Yersinia, Flavobacterium) and Gram-positive (Streptococcus, Lactococcus, Renibacterium) bacterial agents encountered in aquaculture. The content details modern diagnostic methods such as fish necropsy, aseptic sampling, bacterial culture, and PCR. Additionally, it comprehensively addresses therapeutic protocols, including antimicrobial pharmacology, dosage calculations, banned substances (e.g., Nitrofurans), and legal withdrawal periods, as well as prophylactic strategies involving biosecurity and autogenous vaccine applications.
