The aim of the course:
Having the students understand the social and economical structure of ottoman cities and the changes in the cities after the declaration of Tanzimat.

Contents of the Course
City's role and place in agrarian societies at pre-industry era, essential character with rural periphery; Ottoman city's physical structure and organization, administrative, industrial and commercial functions; city's social and cultural configuration; effects of new political, administrative and legal arrangements put in use by Tanzimat reforms on the cities.
